You're a bridesmaid!...Now what?

Some brides look for a lot of help from their bridesmaids, while others only need a minimal amount of support in the months leading up to their wedding. It's a good idea to communicate with the bride from the start to get a clear picture of what she does and doesn't want from you. Here's a checklist of things the bride may or may not need help with -- we suggest going over this together.

Does the bride need help with...?

Scouting locations.
Addressing invitations
Brainstorming and selecting decorations and favors
Registering for gifts
Creating seating arrangements
Putting together gifts for out-of-town guests
Keeping records of gifts received (at bachelorette party, shower, and ceremony)
Making transportation plans.
Help during the rehearsal dinner

While the above is a list of things you may or may not need to help with, the following is a list of definite expectations for most bridesmaids:

Plan on...
Planning the bridal shower and bachelorette party with the maid of honor
Paying for the bridesmaid dress and alterations

On the day of the wedding...
Assist the bride with dressing
Ask if she needs help with anything -- food, drinks, privacy...anything!
Help guests prior to the ceremony
Make sure the bride gets to eat, and keep her cup full. Oftentimes, brides are so busy greeting friends and family that they don't get a chance to get to the bar.
Pack a honeymoon "just in case" bag if the couple is headed out of town immediately. Include: a camera, sunscreen, sunglasses, toiletries, a toothbrush, and snacks.
